I've made my
first CD recording with Boris Andrianov, one of the most
gifted young Russian cellists and the laureate of several
international competitions including the Tchaikovsky Competition.
We recorded this CD in Moscow, on State Radio. It was published
in 2003 by Delos. (This
CD was nominated for "GRAMMY-2004" Awards.)

My next recording was my
first solo CD. I received the possibility to record this
CD as a part of my First Prize at the 2002 GFA Competition
(Miami, Florida). It was recorded in the beautiful St John
Chrysostom Church, Newmarket, Ontario, Canada from 23rd -
26th January, 2003. It was recorded by great Guitarist and
Sound Engineer Norbert Kraft and that was really interesting
and great experience for me to work with him! This CD was
published in September 2003 by Naxos
in their Laureate Series.

The CD "East Side Story" was published in October
2003 by German label Daminus
Records . It was recorded in July 2003 in Kirche zum Heiligen
Kreuz (Kirchwahlingen, Germany), we also used the Dusan Bogdanovic'
piece "Ex Ovo" (2001), which
I recorded in 2002 in Moscow (for an all-Bogdanovic CD that
have just been released by Les
Editions Doberman-Yppan.
This CD also connected somehow with 2002 GFA Competition.
The idea for the CD East Side Story was conceived by Norbert
Dams. Norbert, whose selflessness in promoting contemporary
classical guitar music often includes some bold programming
ideas, is the producer and founder of Daminus Records.
Here is how we met: While on our way to the
Guitar Foundation of America annual convention in October
2002, we shared a flight from Washington DC to Miami. I was
going to take part in the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA)
Competition. Norbert was there to promote his products (CDs
and scores), during the GFA Vendor Fair. We later met during
a reception in the hotel. At the time we knew nothing about
one another. (Looking back, I still find Norbert's remarks
hard to believe: “Dima, when I saw you in the reception of
the hotel, I immediately realized who will be the winner of
the Competition.”) After the finals, but still having no idea
who had won, he asked me: “Would you like to record a CD for
my company? What do you think about doing a project called
“East Side Story”?”
It is no coincidence that the name of this project
reminds me of West Side Story, the musical composed in 1957
by the famous American composer, conductor and pianist Leonard
Bernstein (1918-1990). While this comparison in not without
merit, it is only a part of the “story”. The essence of this
recording project was to record the guitar music of Eastern
European composers, and in so doing bring to the world a music
based on folk melodies and rhythms, in other words, filled
with the essence of the East.
